NASA TV Coverage

ISS On-Orbit Status 02/10/10

All ISS systems continue to function nominally, except those noted previously or below. Sleep shift in effect: The ISS crew’s workday began last evening at 4:14pm and ended this morning at 7:44 EST (see time table at bottom).

STS-130/Endeavour docked smoothly at the ISS PMA-2 (Pressurized Mating Adapter-2) port at ~12:57am EST this morning, late by ~51 min -- of which ~35 min delay was due to lost alignment during retraction, followed by regaining alignment (slowed by gravity gradient) before continuing retraction and hook drive (similar signature was seen on STS-126). After successful completion of the RPM (R-Bar Pitch Maneuver), Endeavour had arrived at +V-Bar (310 ft straight in front of ISS) at few minutes later. The station now hosts eleven occupants as Mission 20A is underway. [The combined crew is comprised of ISS-CDR Jeff Williams (USA), FE-1 Maxim Suraev (Russia), FE-4 Oleg Kotov (Russia), FE-5 Soichi Noguchi (Japan), FE-6 TJ Creamer (USA), STS-CDR George Zamka, PLT Terry Virts, MS1 Kay Hire, MS2 Steve Robinson, MS3 Nicholas Patrick and MS4 Robert Behnken.]

Hook closure to rigidize the Shuttle-ISS linkup was at 12:57am. After the docking, the station was reoriented as planned to minimize the risk of micrometeoroid/debris impacts upon the Shuttle (-XVV = -x-axis in velocity vector, +z-axis in local vertical). [Earlier, at 10:18pm, the ISS maneuvered to docking attitude after attitude control authority was handed over from USOS (US Segment) to RS MCS (Russian Segment Motion Control System) at ~10:13pm. Control returned to US Momentum Management at ~1:35am.]

Before the docking, FE-1 Suraev performed final STTS communications configuration checks for the docking. Upon docking, Maxim switched USOS/RS comm systems to their mated-flight mode.

Do not launch
1.) through or within 5 nautical miles of the nearest edge of cumulus type clouds with tops higher than the 14 degree F level;

2) through or within 10 nautical miles of the nearest edge of cumulus clouds with tops higher than the -4 degrees F. level.

Do not launch if the flight path is through any non-transparent clouds that extend to altitudes at or above the 32 degrees F. level which are associated with disturbed weather producing moderate or greater precipitation, or melting precipitation, within five nautical miles of the flight path.
Do not launch through an attached anvil cloud. If lightning occurs in the anvil or the associated main cloud, do not launch within 10 nautical miles for the first 30 minutes after lightning is observed, or within 5 nautical miles from 30 minutes to 3 hours after lightning is observed.

Do not launch if the flight path will carry the vehicle:

a.) through non-transparent parts of a detached anvil for the first three hours after the anvil detaches from the parent cloud, or the first four hours after the last lightning occurs in the detached anvil.

b.) within 10 nautical miles of non-transparent parts of a detached anvil for the first thirty minutes after the time of the last lightning in the parent or anvil cloud before detachment, or the detached anvil after its detachment.
c.) within 5 nautical miles of non-transparent parts of a detached anvil for the first three hours after the time of the last lightning in the parent or anvil cloud before detachment, or the detached anvil after detachment, unless there is a field mill within 5 nautical miles of the detached anvil reading less than 1,000 volts per meter for the last 15 minutes and a maximum radar returns from any part of the detached anvil within 5 nautical miles of the flight path have been less than 10 dBZ (light rain) for 15 minutes.

Do not launch if the flight path will carry the vehicle through a thunderstorm or cumulonimbus debris cloud which is not transparent and less than three hours old. Launch may not occur within five nautical miles of these debris clouds unless:

1) for 15 minutes preceding launch there is at least one working field mill within five nautical miles of the debris cloud;

2) all electric field mill readings are between -1 kilovolt and + 1 kilovolt per meter within five nautical miles of the flight path;

3) no precipitation has been detected in the debris cloud (less than 10 dbz by radar) within 5 nautical miles of the flight path.
Do not launch if the flight path will carry the vehicle through any cumulus cloud that has developed from a smoke plume while the cloud is attached to the plume, or for the first 60 minutes after the cumulus cloud detaches from the smoke plume.

NASA INVITES PUBLIC TO TWEET THEIR WAY INTO SPACE

HOUSTON -- The Twitterverse and universe will converge during space
shuttle Endeavour's  mission to the International Space
Station. NASA is inviting the public to send questions for the
astronauts via Twitter and have them answered live from space.

Astronaut Mike Massimino will be accepting questions for the crew from
the public via his Twitter account until Thursday, Feb. 11. Massimino
will be a shuttle Capcom, or spacecraft communicator, at NASA's
Mission Control in Houston during Endeavour's flight, scheduled for
launch Feb. 7.

At 2:24 a.m. CST on Feb. 11, Massimino will host an interactive event
with the crew from his console in Mission Control. He will ask the
astronauts as many submitted and live questions as practical during
the 20-minute event. The shuttle will be docked to the station during
the live question and answer session. The event with Endeavour's crew
will be broadcast live on the Web and NASA Television.

The public is invited to start tweeting questions for Endeavour's crew
today to Massimino's Twitter account, @astro_Mike, or add the hashtag
#askastro to their tweets.

Endeavour's 13-day STS-130 mission will include three spacewalks and
the delivery of the Tranquility node, the final module of the U.S.
portion of the station. Tranquility will provide additional room for
crew members and many of the space station's life support and
environmental control systems.

Attached to Tranquility is a cupola, which houses a robotic control
station and has seven windows. The windows will provide a panoramic
view of Earth, celestial objects and visiting spacecraft. After the
node and cupola are added, the orbiting laboratory will be
approximately 90 percent complete.

The time and day of the Twitter session are subject to change due to
mission priorities. Updates to the NASA TV event schedule are
available online at:
