7 Time Cy Young Winner
Roger Clemens
Indicted

roger-clemens
William Roger "Rocket" Clemens, former Major League Baseball pitcher. Clemens won seven Cy Young Awards, the most of any player. Clemens is one of only four pitchers to have more than 4,000 strikeouts in their career.

Charged with Obstruction of Congress, Making False Statements, and Committing Perjury Before a Congressional Committee Panel Investigating Steroid Use in Major League Baseball

WASHINGTON—United States Attorney Ronald C. Machen Jr. and Shawn Henry, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office, announced today that Roger Clemens was indicted by a federal grand jury in Washington, D.C. and charged with one count of obstruction of Congress, three counts of making false statements, and two counts of perjury in connection with his February 2008 testimony before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

The indictment was returned today in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. If convicted of all charges, Clemens, 48, of Houston, Texas, faces a combined maximum sentence of 30 years in prison and a $1.5 million fine. Under the advisory United States Sentencing Guidelines, the range of imprisonment is presently 15-21 months.

In January and February 2008, the House Committee held a hearing titled, “The Mitchell Report: The Illegal Use of Steroids in Major League Baseball.” The hearing examined the allegations contained in a comprehensive report issued in December 2007 by former Senator George J. Mitchell titled, “Report to the Commissioner of Baseball of an Independent Investigation into the Illegal Use of Steroids and Other Performance Enhancing Substances by Players in Major League Baseball.” The Committee’s 2008 hearing followed a Committee hearing in March 2005 that was titled, “Restoring Faith in America’s Pastime: Evaluating Major League Baseball’s Efforts to Eradicate Steroid Use.”

During its 2008 hearing, the Committee took sworn testimony from Senator Mitchell, Clemens and several others. Clemens, a Major League Baseball pitcher from 1984 to 2007, made statements under oath denying his use of anabolic steroids and human growth hormone (HGH). Anabolic steroids and HGH are performance enhancing drugs. Following his testimony, the Committee formally referred this matter to the Department of Justice to investigate whether Clemens committed any federal crimes in connection with his testimony.

The charges in this federal grand jury indictment are a result of that referral. They are set forth in detail in the six-count indictment.

“The Department of Justice takes referrals from Congressional Committees very seriously. Americans have a right to expect that witnesses who testify under oath before Congress will tell the truth,” United States Attorney Machen stated. “Our government cannot function if witnesses are not held accountable for false statements made before Congress. Today the message is clear: if a witness makes a choice to ignore his or her obligation to testify honestly, there will be consequences.”

“The FBI has a responsibility to ensure the integrity of the investigative process is maintained, and that includes the obligation of witnesses to testify truthfully,” said FBI Assistant Director Henry. “This has been a long investigation, and I commend the special agents for their dedication collecting and analyzing the facts that have led to these charges.”

This is the Committee’s second referral to the Department of Justice that resulted from its investigation into steroid use in Major League Baseball. In February 2009, MLB player Miguel Tejada pleaded guilty to making misleading statements to Committee investigators concerning his knowledge of performance enhancing drugs. Tejada’s case stemmed from statements he made in August 2005.

The case is being prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and was investigated by the FBI’s Washington Field Office, with the assistance of the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation.

Long-Distance Motorcyclists Get Set for Colorado Motomarathon

First Full Season Culminates September 17-20

BOULDER, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Motomarathon Association will culminate its first full season September 17-20 with the fourth and final event of 2010. The Colorado Motomarathon features four long days of motorcycle sport-touring looping out of Boulder, with routes held secret until the night before each day’s ride. Participants will attempt to complete a series of self-recorded check-points using digital cameras as they ride an average of 400 miles each day through some of Colorado’s most scenic mountain terrain.

“The Motomarathon format has struck a nerve with today’s sport-touring and long-distance riders, as well as with our 2010 season sponsors Ducati North America (bikes), Aerostich (clothing) and Wolfman (luggage)”

Sponsored by Butler Motorcycle Maps (www.butlermaps.com), the Colorado Motomarathon will highlight some of the best, and often hidden back roads that have been carefully researched and mapped by the Butler Routemasters.

“The Motomarathon format has struck a nerve with today’s sport-touring and long-distance riders, as well as with our 2010 season sponsors Ducati North America (bikes), Aerostich (clothing) and Wolfman (luggage),” said Motomarathon Founder John Metzger. “We welcome Butler Maps as our event sponsor, and look forward to their interpretative routing of some of the state’s best roads.”

The ride starts and ends each day at Basta Pizzeria in Boulder, culminating with an Awards Dinner on Monday evening, September 20th. Day 1 routes will be handed out at 7:00 p.m. Thursday night (Sept. 16) and the next morning at 7:00 a.m. and follow the same schedule each day.

“The new Ducati Multistrada 1200 is a perfect fit for these events,” said Michael Lock, CEO of Ducati North America. “We’re proud to support the Motomarathon, and we’re very excited to promote this highest form of sport-touring.”

FWC extends emergency snook-fishing closure

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has temporarily extended the emergency closure of snook harvest and possession in Florida through Sept. 16. (Executive Order 10-39 )

This action will continue the prohibition on harvest and possession of snook in effect since Jan. 16. The FWC enacted the closure in response to possible effects of prolonged cold weather on the snook population last winter. Catch-and-release fishing for snook is still allowed under this extended closure.

"We took immediate action to prohibit harvest of snook as a proactive, precautionary response to the freeze. We want to make sure that if we reopen the fishery, we will be able to do it knowing the snook population is secure and will continue to rebound from the effects of that unprecedented cold snap," FWC Chairman Rodney Barreto said. "Snook is one of Florida's premier game fish species. Anglers expect us to manage them carefully, and we will."

The temporary extension will enable FWC Commissioners to hear a report by staff at their Sept. 1-3 meeting at Pensacola Beach. They will review the latest information on the status of the snook population, receive public input and determine whether to reopen the fall harvest season or continue to prohibit harvest and possession as a precautionary measure.

The extension of the snook closure will remain in effect until 12:01 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 17. The season normally would have opened on Sept. 1 statewide.

While the temporary harvest prohibition remains in effect, no person may harvest or possess snook in state or federal waters off Florida. The FWC may reopen the fishery, if warranted, before the order expires or, if necessary, the agency may extend the closure by issuing another executive order.

On Sept. 2, during the meeting in Pensacola Beach, Commissioners will hear a report on the extent of damage to the snook population and consider a range of management options covering the next 12 months.

Former President George W. Bush Provides Encouragement to Disabled Veterans Embarking on Himalayan Climb

Twelve Injured Soldiers to Join Erik Weihenmeyer in 20,000 Foot Climb Marking Tenth Anniversary of His Historic Summiting of Mt. Everest

GOLDEN, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Former President George W. Bush called a group of disabled veteran athletes today to provide encouragement and wish them well as they begin training in the Front Range region of the Rocky Mountains this weekend for an extreme mountain climbing challenge that takes place in October. Known as “Soldiers to the Summit,” World T.E.A.M. Sports organized the expedition of 12 wounded combat veterans from the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq who will attempt to summit the 20,075 foot peak of Lobuche East, located just 8.7 miles from Mount Everest in the Himalayas, to evidence that people with disabilities can overcome any challenge. Erik Weihenmeyer, who is celebrating the tenth anniversary of becoming the only blind person to summit Mount Everest, will lead the team. Supporting them are many of the same team of climbers that helped Erik reach the summit of Everest ten years ago.

“support you with my thoughts and prayers.”

President Bush’s call came as the team, comprised of three women and nine men, gathered in Golden, Colorado before going into the Rocky Mountains. The former President spoke individually with each of the eight veterans who were present. Among the personal discussions, President Bush and former Airman Zachary Martinez shared some memories of their time at Moody Air Force Base in Georgia, where both had served. In addition, the President shared some memories with Erik and members of the Everest team, who he had hosted in the White House after their historic climb in 2001.

Aware that all of the veterans have suffered serious injuries, President Bush told the team that he was “really proud you’re setting an example” for others with disabilities and that he will “support you with my thoughts and prayers.” President Bush said he would follow the team’s climb on the web, and he asked them to call with a report as soon as they are back home.

“Activities like the Himalayan Expedition prove that exceptional athletes do matter and that people of all abilities can do even the most difficult tasks, not just in sports but in all walks of life,” said Jeff Messner, President of World T.E.A.M. Sports. “By bringing together disabled and able-bodied athletes in difficult challenges that require teamwork and rely on an understanding of one another’s competence, we hope to educate all people about the capabilities of those with a physical handicap.“

On October 1st, the team will depart for Nepal where they will attempt to summit the peaks of Lobuche East and Kala Pattar mountains in the Himalayas. This extraordinary challenge includes seven days of trekking through the spectacular Khumbu region to a Base Camp at 16,269 feet. After a day of rest, the team will then climb slabby terraces and snow slopes beneath the main glaciers of the South-West Face of Lobuche East. At the point where the glacier face and ridge meet, they will establish a high camp at 18,305 feet. On the 13th day of this difficult trek, the team will then attempt to summit the 20,075 foot peak of Lobuche East. This is a technical rock, snow, and ice climb of great difficulty. Thereafter, the team will spend as many as six days working their way back down and return to Kathmandu. More information about the expedition, the participating veterans and support team, as well as how to donate to this cause can be found at www.soldierstothesummit.org.

“This expedition will be the living embodiment of our longstanding motto – we give courage to others to do great things by our own examples of doing great things,” according to Erik Weihenmeyer. “In concert with the incredible team of climbers who helped me make history ten years ago, we decided that there would be no more fitting way to celebrate the anniversary of that achievement than to provide that same example for the many brave men and women who were injured in their service to our country by leading a team of injured veterans on a similar journey.”

To prepare for the challenges of Nepal and the summiting of Lobuche East, the team will begin their training this weekend on two peaks near Idaho Springs, Colorado. While a few of the veterans have done some prior climbing, none are experienced with the difficulties of the challenge they face and many have never climbed at all. On Thursday, the team will hike into the mountains and set up a base camp at the foot of St. Mary’s glacier. On Friday, they will climb St. Mary’s glacier in order to practice ascending on fixed lines, rope travel, clipping on & off safely, the use of crampons for climbing, and learn how to self-arrest in the case of falls. On Saturday, the team will do more climbing and hiking on both James Peak, at over 13,000 feet, to acclimate to weather, altitude and build up their endurance.

Conservation education and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill

August 2010 Bob Wattendorf

Summer provides ample opportunity for children to develop a love of nature. Every time they get outdoors and connect a little more with nature, it helps them develop healthier, happier and smarter lifestyles and appreciation for conservation. Whether they visit a fishing pond, climb a tree, help in the garden, go swimming or tubing, or explore a park or wooded lot, it gets them outside to participate in active pursuits.

When Richard Louv published "Last Child in the Woods - Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder" in 2005, it spurred a global movement led by the Children and Nature Network to accomplish just that. In Florida, Get Outdoors Florida! is both the initiative and coalition, with the goal of helping parents and families find fun ways to lead healthier, more-natural lifestyles and to better appreciate our resources. Visit  GetOutdoorsFlorida.org for places to go and tips on fun activities. You can also learn more about the benefits or how to make a contribution.

Ever since the oil-drilling platform, Deepwater Horizon, exploded in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20, setting off one of the largest ecological disasters in American history, Floridians have been reconsidering how critical a conservation ethic is to our quality of life.

It is important that parents be able to communicate with their children at an appropriate age level about catastrophes of all types as well as the importance of nurturing nature. Ranger Rick (NWF.org/Kids/RangerRick)  provides some excellent tips.

The FWC continues to work diligently with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, county governments, water management districts and several federal agencies, to conduct wildlife assessments and to protect Florida's wildlife populations throughout this crisis. This includes taking water samples and testing for contaminants in sediments, fish and shellfish, and evaluating critical habitat and shorebird and sea turtle nesting areas.

Gov. Charlie Crist requested and received a determination from the U.S. Department of Commerce that some of Florida's vital fisheries have failed. This enables fishermen and affected businesses to qualify for economic injury loans. Meanwhile, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Fisheries Service has enacted emergency regulations to close a portion of the Gulf of Mexico exclusive economic zone to all fishing, and the FWC has issued local fisheries advisories. Since these are subject to change, please see MyFWC.com/OilSpill  for updates.

In spite of all this, Florida remains the Fishing Capital of the World, with most of our saltwater fisheries and all of our freshwater fisheries still providing diverse, year-round, nature-based recreation to Floridians and tourists. Help keep it that way by taking a kid fishing, buying a license and contributing to youth fishing/hunting programs when you make your purchase (MyFWC.com/License) . All of your license fees go to conservation, and donations go specifically to youth fishing and hunting programs in Florida.

The FWC is working aggressively to protect and restore fish and wildlife species and their habitats and to reconnect children with nature, since the ultimate solution to such ecological crises will be in their hands. Floridians should care about and be able to enjoy our natural resources in ways that our forebears did to preserve not only our sporting heritage, but also Florida's diverse natural wildlife and the aesthetics that drive the real estate economy, tourism and our sense of being.

Education and opportunity are the key. When children or adults get outdoors more frequently they achieve healthier, happier and smarter lifestyles (see childrenandnature.org for details) and understand how fragile and interconnected our environment is.

The President's "America's Great Outdoors Initiative" (DOI.gov/AmericasGreatOutdoors) is a national efforts that contributes to preserving and enjoying our natural heritage. Together we can keep Florida a beautiful place for children, fish and wildlife to grow together as nature always intended.

WANTED: Winner of $75,000 “Dash 4 Cash” Bonus in Lone Star State

Kyle Busch Spoils Nationwide Insurance’s “Dash 4 Cash” Payout at Iowa Speedway

NEWTON, Iowa--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Everything is bigger in Texas, including Nationwide Insurance’s Dash 4 Cash bonus.

NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Kyle Busch won tonight’s U.S. Cellular 250 presented by Northland Oil and John Deere. However, since the driver of the No. 18 Z-Line Designs Toyota, does not compete full-time in the NASCAR Nationwide Series, he was not eligible for tonight’s $50,000 bonus.

The final “Dash 4 Cash” takes place during the O’Reilly Auto Parts Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway on Nov. 6, giving one eligible driver a chance at a $75,000 Texas-size payout.

What is normally a $25,000 payout increased to $50,000 when Meijer 300 Kentucky Speedway race winner Joey Logano, the only non-eligible driver, won the race. Should a non-eligible driver wrangle up a win on Nov. 6, the “Dash 4 Cash” prize money will be rolled into the season-ending bonus program.

This year’s season-ending bonus for the driver accumulating the most points in the four-race program is up to $75,000, a raise from the $50,000 bonus in 2009. To be eligible for the year-end prize, drivers cannot participate in more than seven NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races during the season.

The 2010 “Dash 4 Cash” bonus program is open to all NASCAR Nationwide Series regulars and up-and-comers, including those who may not have a full-time NASCAR Nationwide Series ride. NASCAR Nationwide Series drivers with a full-time ride in NASCAR Sprint Cup must enter every NASCAR Nationwide Series event in order to qualify for the cash payouts in the four races.

Kevin Harvick won the season’s first “Dash 4 Cash” bonus in April at Nashville Superspeedway. Harvick was eligible for the $25,000 prize since he had run in every NASCAR Nationwide Series event until that point.

Italian Race Company, Dallara, to Open U.S. Base in Speedway, Ind.

IRL Chassis Manufacturer Operations Will Create Jobs and Spur Economic Growth in Indiana

SPEEDWAY, Ind.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The Speedway Redevelopment Commission (SRC) announced today that Italian-based racing company Dallara will expand its operations to Speedway, Ind. – the home of the Indianapolis 500®, Brickyard 400® and Red Bull Indianapolis GP®. This location will be the racing company’s only operation outside of Parma, Italy. The news follows the announcement that Dallara was recently selected by the Indy Racing League (IRL) as the chassis manufacturer for the 2012 IndyCar Series.

“The new Dallara IndyCar will be built in Speedway, Ind., and it will set new standards in terms of safety, fuel efficiency, raceability, technology performance and cost containment”

“This announcement is in the spirit of Speedway’s redevelopment vision,” said Vince Noblet, SRC president. “We are pleased that Dallara has made a commitment to manufacture and assemble its new chassis for the 2012 IndyCar Series season in the United States, and specifically in Speedway. This is exactly what we’ve been waiting for.”

The expansion will allow for the creation more than 80 new jobs in Speedway. Dallara will move into a new, state-of-the-art technology center located on Main Street, investing $7 million into the community.

"The new Dallara IndyCar will be built in Speedway, Ind., and it will set new standards in terms of safety, fuel efficiency, raceability, technology performance and cost containment,” said Gianpoalo Dallara, founder of Dallara Automobili. “Dallara has been a trusted, credible, stable and loyal partner of the Indy Racing League for the past 12 years. We are committed to the development of this new car by locating a dedicated facility near the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.”

The IRL’s announcement will lead to future investments in Indiana’s motorsports industry, and will additionally bring new manufacturing, automotive technology development and IndyCar racing teams to the area. Dallara has stated that it will encourage its distributors and other businesses to also move into Speedway’s redevelopment area to continue to foster the growth of a vibrant, racing-centered community.

“Dallara is a high-profile, innovative racing company that will bring jobs and stimulate our local economy,” said Bill Suffel, president of the Speedway Town Council. “We believe Dallara is a great fit for our community due to our mutual dedication to the racing industry and advanced technology. We welcome Dallara to our community, and are happy it has committed to forming the foundation of a redeveloped Speedway.”

About Speedway Redevelopment:

In November 2009, the SRC broke ground on Main Street, its first construction project. The $10 million Main Street project is the first milestone in the town’s Redevelopment Area One and is part of a $500 million investment to breathe new life into 400 acres of multi-use property that will be primed for commercial, shopping and entertainment, residential and research and development projects. Made possible through private and public investment, the redevelopment zone will be a vibrant, thriving and attractive downtown that will foster growth within the existing business community and encourage development of new business.

SRC consists of five volunteers appointed by the Speedway Town Council. Using input from the entire community, the commission is charged with developing a plan to revitalize a 700-acre area, including Speedway’s Main Street.
