Lost ship found 150 years later

Toronto 2010-07-30 05:45:09 (GMT) WiredPRNews.com – A ship reportedly missing for over 150 years has been recovered. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the ship, the HMS Investigator, was recently found in Mercy Bay by Canadian archeologists after being abandoned in 1853.

Marc-Andre Bernier, Parks Canada’s head of underwater archaeology, is quoted by the AP as stating of the ship, “The ship is standing upright in very good condition. It’s standing in about 11 meters (36 feet) of water… This is definitely of the utmost importance. This is the ship that sailed the last leg of the Northwest Passage.”

Bernier is further quoted as stating of the recovery, “This is actually a human history… Not only a history of the Passage, but the history of a crew of 60 men who had to overwinter three times in the Arctic not knowing if they were going to survive.”

NASA Astronaut Sends First Sign language Message from Orbit

WASHINGTON -- The number of languages used on the International Space Station has recently increased. In addition to those spoken in the 15 countries that have had representatives aboard the space station, American Sign Language, or ASL, is now included. NASA astronaut Tracy Caldwell Dyson has sent a message in ASL from the station to the deaf community.

In the video, Caldwell Dyson answered several questions about living and working aboard the station and how she became interested in sign language.

"I am truly grateful for this opportunity on behalf of the deaf community and the multitudes of students who will benefit from seeing their language spoken in space," Caldwell Dyson said. "It is my hope that this video will help inspire our next generation of scientists and explorers."

As NASA's missions advance beyond Earth's orbit, the agency will continue its efforts to highlight its diverse workforce. NASA strives to assist the next generation of researchers to gain access to science-related fields.

Caldwell Dyson will work on several other videos targeted to users of ASL. When the videos are completed, they will be posted on the agency's website at: http://www.nasa.gov

NASA Mars Rover Seeing Destination in More Detail

mars-landscape
Since the summer of 2008, when NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity finished two years of studying Victoria Crater, the rover's long-term destination has been the much larger Endeavour Crater to the southeast.

June 29, 2010 - Mars rover team members have begun informally naming features around the rim of Endeavour Crater, as they develop plans to investigate that destination when NASA's Opportunity rover arrives there after many more months of driving.

A new, super-resolution view of a portion of Endeavour's rim reveals details that were not discernible in earlier images from the rover. Several high points along the rim can be correlated with points discernible from orbit.

Super-resolution is an imaging technique combining information from multiple pictures of the same target to generate an image with a higher resolution than any of the individual images.

Endeavour has been the team's long-term destination for Opportunity since the summer of 2008, when the rover finished two years of studying Victoria Crater. By the spring of 2010, Opportunity had covered more than a third of the charted, 19-kilometer (12-mile) route from Victoria to Endeavour and reached an area with a gradual, southward slope offering a view of Endeavour's elevated rim.

After the rover team chose Endeavour as a long-term destination, the goal became even more alluring when observations with the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars, on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, found clay minerals exposed at Endeavour. Clay minerals, which form under wet conditions, have been found extensively on Mars from orbit, but have not been examined on the surface. Additional observations with that spectrometer are helping the rover team choose which part of Endeavour's rim to visit first with Opportunity.

The team is using the theme of names of places visited by British Royal Navy Capt. James Cook in his 1769-1771 Pacific voyage in command of H.M.S. Endeavour for informal names of sites at Endeavour Crater. Points visible in the super-resolution view from May 12 include "Cape Tribulation" and "Cape Dromedary."

Voyager 2 at 12,000 Days: The Super-Marathon Continues

June 28, 2010 - NASA's plucky Voyager 2 spacecraft has hit a long-haul operations milestone today (June 28) -- operating continuously for 12,000 days. For nearly 33 years, the venerable spacecraft has been returning data about the giant outer planets, and the characteristics and interaction of solar wind between and beyond the planets. Among its many findings, Voyager 2 discovered Neptune's Great Dark Spot and its 450-meter-per-second (1,000-mph) winds.

The two Voyager spacecraft have been the longest continuously operating spacecraft in deep space. Voyager 2 launched on August 20, 1977, when Jimmy Carter was president. Voyager 1 launched about two weeks later on Sept. 5. The two spacecraft are the most distant human-made objects, out at the edge of the heliosphere -- the bubble the sun creates around the solar system. Mission managers expect Voyager 1 to leave our solar system and enter interstellar space in the next five years or so, with Voyager 2 on track to enter interstellar space shortly after that.

Having traveled more than 21 billion kilometers (13 billion miles) on its winding path through the planets toward interstellar space, the spacecraft is now nearly 14 billion kilometers (9 billion miles) from the sun. A signal from the ground, traveling at the speed of light, takes about 12.8 hours one-way to reach Voyager 2.

Voyager 1 will reach this 12,000-day milestone on July 13, 2010 after traveling more than 22 billion kilometers (14 billion miles). Voyager 1 is currently more than 17 billion kilometers (11 billion miles) from the sun.

The Voyagers were built by JPL, which continues to operate both spacecraft. Caltech manages JPL for NASA.

Search Engine Optimization for Websites

2010-06-11 03:12:31 (GMT) – Google recently unveiled new features to their search engine that presents a number of search engine optimization opportunities. In a recent interview with Web Pro News, Matt Cutts of Google, cited the opportunities that many webmasters and SEOs may miss by choosing to limit their focus to PageRank. Dallas based website design and development firm One SEO Company, outlines three key opportunities discussed in the interview that should be kept in mind when implementing SEO.

More Than Just Being Number One

As stated by Cutts in the WPN interview, “some people get really obsessed with their one trophy phrase on their number one ranking for their number one search…You don’t have to be number one, maybe you can be number one on a slightly different area that people will find by exploring.” The narrow focus significantly hinders one’s ability to take full advantage of their SEO opportunities. The following are three key things to consider in ensuring that no stone is left unturned with regards to SEO opportunities.

• Content, Titles, and URLs Matter – Focusing on more than just one trophy phrase is important for broadening one’s reach. Development in content, titles, and URLs are included in the list of other signals that matter as well.

• “Go Where The People Are” - People who are seeking one’s product, service, or idea can be found in places other than search. Social media outlets are becoming essential for inclusion in most SEM strategies today.

• There’s More Than One Way to Be Number One – There are more ways to be found than what is deemed the typical keyword search. Blog search, image search, video search, book search, and social media search are items neglected by some SEOs and webmasters.

Shoe, over 5,000 years old, found

Washington 2010-06-10 21:23:16 (GMT)– The world’s oldest leather shoe has been found in Armenia. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the researchers led by archaeologist Ron Pinhasi of University College Cork in Cork, Ireland, reported the finding in the PLoS One journal of the Public Library of Science this week.

The shoe is estimated to be between 5,637 and 5,387 years old. Pinhasi is quoted by the AP as stating of the discovery, “This is great luck… We normally only find broken pots, but we have very little information about the day-to-day activity” [of the ancient individuals who occupied the area]. “What did they eat? What did they do? What did they wear? This is a chance to see this … it gives us a real glimpse into society.”

Astronomers Discover New Star-Forming Regions in Milky Way

milky-way-galaxy

May 26, 2010 - Astronomers studying the Milky Way have discovered a large number of previously unknown regions where massive stars are being formed. Their discovery, made with the help of NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, provides important new information about the structure of our home galaxy and promises to yield new clues about its composition.

The star-forming regions the astronomers sought, called H II regions, are sites where hydrogen atoms are stripped of their electrons by intense radiation from massive, young stars. To find these regions, hidden from visible-light detection by the Milky Way's gas and dust, the researchers used infrared and radio telescopes.

"We found our targets by using the results of infrared surveys done with NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope and of surveys done with the National Science Foundation's Very Large Array radio telescope," said astronomer Loren Anderson of the Astrophysical Laboratory of Marseille in France, who worked on the project. "Objects that appear bright in both the Spitzer and Very Large Array images we studied are good candidates for H II regions."

Further analysis allowed the astronomers to determine the locations of the H II regions. They found concentrations of the regions at the end of the galaxy's central bar and in its spiral arms. Their analysis also showed that 25 of the regions are farther from the galaxy's center than the sun.

Chimps react similar to humans with death

chimp

A new study finds that the reactions of chimps in the event of a death is similar to that of humans.

London (WiredPRNews.com)2010-04-27 01:20:18 (GMT) – Reseachers have found that chimpanzees react similarly to humans when they experience the death of a group member. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), footage taken from Scotland’s Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park showed three chimps embracing another who was dying and checking the animal for vital signs during its death.

James Anderson, a lecturer in psychology at Scotland’s University of Stirling, an co-author of the study, is quoted by the AP as stating of the video, “It’s the first time to our knowledge that people have been able to capture on video the precise moment at which an adult chimpanzee dies in the midst of his or her group.”

More information about the study may be available in Tuesday’s release of the Current Biology journal.

Asteroid credited with dinosaur extinction

Research suggests an asteroid is to blame for dinosaurs becoming extinct.

London (WiredPRNews.com) – New research suggests an asteroid is the cause of dinosaurs becoming extinct. As reported by Reuters, a global research team stated in hopes of providing clarification of the long questioned matter Thursday that an asteroid crashed into Earth wiping out the creatures, which explains why they disappeared.

Joanna Morgan of Imperial College London, who co-authored the study review, is quoted by Reuters as stating of the research, “We now have great confidence that an asteroid was the cause of the KT extinction. This triggered large-scale fires, earthquakes measuring more than 10 on the Richter scale, and continental landslides, which created tsunamis.”

Morgan is further quoted as stating the “final nail in the coffin for the dinosaurs” came when blasted material flew into the atmosphere, shrouding the planet in darkness, causing a global winter and “killing off many species that couldn’t adapt to this hellish environment.”

The discovery was carried out by an Egyptian team from the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) during routine work reducing the groundwater’s level.

Dr. Zahi Hawass, Secretary General of the SCA, said that the first statue depicts the 18th Dynasty king, Amenhotep III, together with the god Re-Horakhty, while the second statue represents the god of wisdom, Thoth, in the form of a baboon. A huge, calcite statue fragment possibly dating to the reign of Amenhotep III, was also found.

Mansour Boriak, General Supervisor of the Luxor Antiquities Department of the SCA, added that excavation work is ongoing in order to discover further statues which once stood inside the temple at Kom el-Hettan.
