St. Mary Parish Kidnapper Arrested by U.S. Marshals in Miami

On June 25th U.S. Marshals arrested twenty-five-year-old Jose Santos in Miami nearly one week after Santos allegedly kidnapped his fifteen-year-old girlfriend. St. Mary filed charges against Santos on Tuesday, June 23rd for Aggravated Kidnapping. At that time the U.S. Marshal’s Western District of Louisiana’s Fugitive Task Force was already working the case; Saint Mary Parish officials contacted the US Marshals on June 20th stating that Santos had fled and was believed to be in Florida.

As soon as the warrant was issued, U.S. Marshals in Lafayette contacted U.S. Marshals in Ft. Lauderdale who immediately adopted the case and began running down information, mainly searching for Santos’ 2007 Ford Pickup.

On June 25th at approximately 6:30 p.m. (EST) Deputies and Task Force Officers from Florida’s US Marshals Regional Task Force in Ft. Lauderdale and Miami converged on an area in Miami where both Santos and the victim were believed to be. The child was spotted at a gas station with her suitcase and Santos was located and arrested while walking down the street. The child is believed to be unharmed and Santos could face charges in Florida.

The United States Marshal for the Western District of Louisiana said, “The coordinated effort of all law enforcement to bring dangerous criminals to justice ensures that the streets and neighborhoods of Louisiana are a safer place to raise our children.”

Annually, investigations carried out by the U.S. Marshals result in the apprehension of approximately 34,000 federal fugitives. More federal fugitives are arrested by Marshals than all other federal agencies combined.

The Western District of Louisiana’s Task Force is a team comprised of law enforcement officers from agencies throughout the Western part of Louisiana (Shreveport, Monroe, Lake Charles, Alexandria, Opelousas, and Lafayette). The task force objective is to seek out and arrest federal, state, and local fugitives, mainly those with violent criminal histories to include sex offenders. In 2008, U.S. Marshals task forces arrested more than 73,000 state and local fugitives on felony charges.
