Pastor Rick Warren has drawn in massive donations for his church after making a plea. Lake Forest, California (WiredPRNews.com) – Efforts by evangelical pastor Rick Warren to raise enough donations to cover a $900,000 budget deficit for his Southern California based church have proven effective. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Warren’s donation plea has helped raise $2.4 million for Saddleback Church. Warren is quoted by the AP as stating of the donations received, “This is pretty amazing… I don’t think any church has gotten a cash offering like that off a letter.” Warren made an announcement of the donations to his congregation, citing the total only included what had been received as of New Year’s Eve and more was anticipated. He is further quoted as stating, “We’re starting the new decade with a surplus… It came from thousands of ordinary people. Tulsa, Oklahoma (WiredPRNews.com) – Pioneering TV evangelist Oral Roberts has died. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Roberts passed away Tuesday in California after being hospitalized on Saturday. He reportedly died of pneumonia related complications. Duke University divinity school professor Grant Wacker is quoted by the AP as stating of Robert’s impact on mainstream religious television, “In conservative Protestant culture, he’s second only to Billy Graham… Jerry Falwell is important, too, but I think in the long run we’ll see that Oral Roberts had more impact.” Biographer David Edwin Harrell is further quoted in the report as stating of Roberts, “Oral was a pioneer in opening this whole message up to the mainstream churches and leading a generation of Pentecostals into easier connection with the evangelical world… They had been completely estranged prior to that.” Roberts, who founded Oral Roberts University in 1963, was 91 at the time of his death.
