Dallas, Texas (WiredPRNews.com) – The family of a police officer who was fatally injured in a motorcade accident while escorting then U.S. presidential candidate Hilary Clinton two years ago has filed a lawsuit against the city of Dallas, Clinton and others. As reported by the Dallas Morning News, the family of Senior Cpl. Victor Lozada filed suit Monday alleging Lozada received insufficient training for the assignment and other issues. The 49 year-old veteran Dallas officer reportedly hit a concrete guardrail during the accident, which contributed to his injuries. David Schiller, an attorney for the Lozada family, is quoted in the report as stating of the lawsuit, “None of this is going to bring back their father and husband;” however the decision was made to file suit “because they don’t believe that without taking legal action many of these things are going to change on their own.” Harris Poll Finds That Consumers Love Kisses: Hershey’s Ranks Highest Overall in Brand Equity M rand Ms, Google, Duracell, Reese’s, Heinz, Kleenex, Oreo and Neosporin all score in top ten World War II History
On February 23, 1945, during the battle for Iwo Jima, U.S. Marines raised a flag atop Mount Suribachi. It was taken down, and a second flag was raised. Associated Press photographer Joe Rosenthal captured this second flag-raising. Now part of U.S. Navy records, it is one of the most famous war photographs in U.S. history. Flag raising on Mount Suribachi In the following animated gif, United States Marines land on Iwo Jima island, climb Mount Suribachi, first raising a small flag that they carried with them, and then later, made a second flag raising, using a larger flag from a landing craft vessel.
Iwo Jima Vets Observe Battle’s 65th Anniversary The battle for Iwo Jima – the first U.S. attack on Japanese soil – is memorialized worldwide by the famous Joe Rosenthal photo of five Marines and a Navy corpsman raising the U.S. flag on Mount Suribachi. Three of the six later were killed in battle. Inquiry into Lower Merion School District Activating Web Cams on Student Issued Computers United States Attorney Michael L. Levy and FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Janice Fedarcyk announced today that the United States Attorney’s Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation would be involved in the inquiry into allegations that the Lower Merion School District activated web cams on computers issued to students. Ordinarily, federal law enforcement agencies do not confirm the existence of an investigation. The Department of Justice does have an exception for matters that have already received substantial publicity, or where the community needs to be reassured that law enforcement is investigating the incident. Levy said, “We intend to work as a team with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office, the Montgomery County Detectives, and the Lower Merion Police Department to determine if any crimes were committed. The issues raised by these allegations are wide-ranging and involve the meeting of the new world of cyberspace with that of physical space. Our focus will only be on whether anyone committed any crimes. At this point, very few facts are known. Our first responsibility will be to conduct an orderly investigation to learn the facts. Only then, will we be able to make any judgments regarding violations of the laws. We do not intend to comment any further before our investigation is complete.” The Discovery of the Family Secrets of King Tutankhamun
DNA and CT scan analysis of the mummy of the 18th Dynasty pharaoh Tutankhamun (ca. 1333-1323 BC) and of mummies either known or believed to be members of his immediate family have revealed startling new evidence for the young king’s lineage and cause of death The principal conclusions made by the team are that Tutankhamun’s father was the “heretic” king, Akhenaten, whose body is now almost certainly identified with the mummy from KV 55 in the Valley of the Kings. His mother, who still cannot be identified by name, is the “Younger Lady” buried in the tomb of Amenhotep II (KV 35). The mummy of the “Elder Lady” from the same tomb can now be conclusively identified as Tutankhamun’s grandmother, Queen Tiye. New light was shed on the cause of death for Tutankhamun with the discovery of DNA from the parasite that causes malaria; it is likely that the young king died from complications resulting from a severe form of this disease. Most people have favorable view of own health A new study suggests many Americans deem themselves as healthy. U.S. (WiredPRNews.com) – A new study suggests the majority of people hold a favorable view of their own health in comparison to the health of others. As reported by HealthDay News, over half of the people surveyed for the study ranked their health better than the health of others. Dr. Michael Roizen, author of the study and chairman of The Cleveland Clinic’s Wellness Institute, is quoted in the report as stating of the findings, “Either people are denying reality about themselves or they don’t have the correct knowledge and believe they are doing the right things… Personally, I think there is a lot of misinformation [about healthy habits].” Eva To, a registered dietician in White Plains, N.Y., is further quoted in the report as stating, “Americans are just not into prevention… If they are not sick, they think they are healthy. But most of the killers are silent diseases, such as diabetes, high blood pressure and hardening of the arteries. We don’t feel it, but they are killers all the same.” As noted in the report, the GE Healthcare, The Cleveland Clinic and Ochsner Health System commissioned survey was released Tuesday. Teen launches controversial website A Russian teenager is the purported mastermind of a new website that connects users to strangers. Washington (WiredPRNews.com) – A new website that’s gained major publicity since its launch is reportedly the brainchild of a Russian teen. As reported by AFP, the site Chatroulette.com, has sparked controversy, with some disapproving of its live video connection of users and random others whose identities they do not know, and others viewing it as ingenious. Fred Wilson, a venture capitalist with Union Square Ventures and Flatiron Partners, is quoted by AFP as stating of the site, “There certainly is a disturbing amount of perversion and sexual innuendo on Chatroulette, but there is so much else…The Internet is this huge network with over a billion people worldwide on it…Chatroulette feels like a pretty cool way to take a quick trip around that network, meeting people and talking to them.” Andrey Ternovskiy, the 17-year-old Moscow student who founded Chatroulette, is further quoted in the report as stating to The New York Times of his venture, “Everyone finds his own way of using the site. Some think it is a game, others think it is a whole unknown world, others think it is a dating service….I think it’s cool that such a simple concept can be useful for so many people.” Facebook changes privacy options The social networking site places new privacy controls on third party applications. San Francisco (WiredPRNews.com) – Facebook has made changes to its site, allowing users to have more control over items viewed from third party programs. As reported by AFP, the site is extending previously launched content sharing tools to applications created by other developers for users. Facebook engineer Ray He is quoted by AFP as stating of the changes, “Maybe you don’t want all of your friends to see the humorous greeting card you just posted from an application… Now, you can set that post to be viewable only by certain friends.” He is further quoted as stating in a blog post, “There are now granular privacy options that enable you to personalize the audience for each piece of content you share through applications… These new controls give you the power to determine who sees the content you post to Facebook through any third-party application.
