Verdict in United States of America v. Alphonse Capone, October 17, 1931
In June 1930, after an exhaustive investigation by the federal government, notorious Chicago gangster Al Capone was indicted for income tax evasion. During a highly publicized trial, the prosecution documented Capone’s lavish spending and proof that Capone was aware of his obligation to pay federal income tax but failed to do so. After nearly 9 hours of deliberation, the jurors found Capone guilty of three felonies and two misdemeanors. Capone was sentenced to serve 11 years in prison and to pay $80,000 in fines and court costs.
Charles Arthur Floyd, better known as 'Pretty Boy'October 22, 1934
Two cars traveled down a country road towards the Conkle farm, two miles south of a small town named Clarkson on the eastern edge of Ohio. It was 4:10 on the afternoon of October 22, 1934, and history was about to unfold. In one car were four Bureau agents, led by Chicago Special Agent in Charge Melvin Purvis. In the other were four local law enforcement officers, headed by East Liverpool Chief of Police Hugh McDermott. The group was searching for Charles Arthur Floyd—known far and wide as “Pretty Boy,” a nickname he hated and refused to answer to, preferring “Choc”—and they quickly realized they’d found him. Wearing a navy blue suit, Floyd jumped from a car he was riding in and bolted across a rolling field, pistol in hand. Within minutes, Floyd would breathe his last. Dillinger Myth
A “lady in a red dress” betrayed Dillinger. Actually, it was a lady in an orange skirt and white blouse named Anna (Ana) Sage. Sage—a Romanian who was friends with Dillinger’s girlfriend at the time, Polly Hamilton—came up with the idea of turning in the fugitive after she was invited to go to the movies with the couple. She contacted the East Chicago, Indiana Police Department, who passed her on to Purvis.
While Sage hoped that the FBI might help her avoid deportation, she also wanted the $5,000 reward. She told Purvis she would be attending a movie with Dillinger and Hamilton at the Biograph and would wear an orange skirt to set her apart from the crowd. (The red dress was an invention of the media—red tends to be a more alluring color and apparently sounded better in a headline.) After Dillinger’s death, Sage was paid the reward, but the FBI was not able to influence her deportation proceedings, and she was sent back to Romania. IN SEARCH OF D.B. Could this be Whitey Bulger?
Late last year, the Federal Bureau of Investigation had reports of sightings of Jimmy Bulger in the state of Florida. The Collier County Sheriff's Office, has a new cold case Facebook page and is asking citizens for assistance. The image above, may have a resemblance to Jimmy Bulger. One of the FBI’s most notorious fugitives was in the spotlight tuesday 2-10-09, as a briefing for international media at the State Department offered a global perspective on James “Whitey” Bulger, the Boston crime boss wanted for his role in 19 murders and a host of other offenses. Because Bulger is believed to be living overseas, “the focus of the case has become international,” said Richard Teahan, a Supervisory Special Agent in our Boston office who is in charge of the case. Through international exposure, Teahan said, “We hope to make his world smaller for him.” There is currently a reward of up to $2 million for Bulger, the largest reward we’ve ever offered for any of our U.S. Top Ten fugitives. The following audio recordings were taken by the FBI during their criminal investigation of Bulger and are being released at this time as the BFTF believes the international exposure of the recordings will be beneficial to the future investigation.
Whitey Bulger could be in disguise. He was purported to frequent drag bars, although nobody said this when he was around, go figure, the guy whacked a lot of people. Our sketch artist, who will remain anonymous for obvious reasons, came up with a few ideas depicted here. Personally, I like the one on the lower right with the big collar. Hey Whitey, is that you man, come on, Whitey, come on, Whitey, noooooooo! Is there a doctor in the house? UPDATE - 23:45 9/8/2009 The FBI said last week that it has had a recent increase in reported sightings of Bulger in Florida. Authorities say they are investigating the tips and re-examining Bulger's connections in Florida and reevaluating old leads from places around the world, including Ireland, England, Canada, South America and Central America. The last confirmed sighting of Bulger was in London in 2002.
