Cut out those dirty habits at work

The average desk’s surface contains more than 10 million germs – but they can easily be eradicated

As more of us spend increasing amounts of time at our office or home desks, the areas around where we work are becoming ever-greater hazards to our health.

Hard surfaces, such as telephones, computer mice, printer buttons and door handles, are among the likely areas where some of the millions of germs lurking in every office are hiding – just waiting for their next unsuspecting victim.

Research has shown that the average office desk harbours more than 10 million germs. Many of these can cause minor illnesses, but, left unchecked, they can multiply to the extent that they become a serious health risk.

In order to help staff win this germ warfare battle, safety goods and signs supplier safetyshop.com has added a comprehensive range of eco-friendly office cleaning equipment to its selection.

These latest products help keep every office surface clean and, more importantly, help to drastically reduce the amount of bacteria workers are exposed to.

“A proper, regular cleaning regime is proven to eliminate up to 99.9 per cent of the bacteria found in most offices,” says Kimberley Slack of Safetyshop.

“Safetyshop’s range of desktop cleaning agents has been specifically formulated with the most up-to-date ingredients to ensure safe and effective antimicrobial cleaning of all computer equipment and hard surfaces.”

The range is also entirely alcohol free, non toxic and non hazardous. All bottles and wipes are 100 per cent recyclable and cleaning wipes are 100 per cent biodegradable.

Among the lines available at www.safetyshop.com are desk, computer and telephone wipes, screen cleaning sprays and hygienic disposable cloths

.

All desktop cleaning products can be ordered online, or by phone, fax or email, and next-day delivery is available for UK orders, subject to stock availability.

To request a catalogue detailing the full range of thousands of safety and cleaning products available, email sales@safetyshop.com, or visit www.safetyshop.com to shop and place an order.

Researchers Say Exercises Can Reduce Parkinson’s Effects

WiredPRNews.com Scientists from the Harvard School of Public Health, University of Pittsburgh and University of Southern California discovered that exercise can slow the progression of Parkinson’s disease (known as “PD”).

The studies suggest that regular physical activity can help to reduce damage to neurons in the brain that causes Parkinson’s disease.

“Parkinson’s disease is an illness that affects muscle movement,” says Kay Mixson Jenkins, author of the new children’s book Who Is Pee Dee? “Anything that can help to maintain normal muscle tone and flexibility is extremely important.”

Ms. Jenkins was diagnosed with PD when she was just thirty-four. She decided to write her book to help her children understand the disease. The story follows a young boy named Colt as he tries to deal with his mother’s chronic illness.

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that affects nearly 1.5 million Americans; approximately 50,000 are diagnosed with the disease every year.

According to the Mayo Clinic, “Exercise has important benefits for everyone regardless of age or physical condition… When your condition threatens to immobilize you, exercise keeps you moving… To retain your mobility and function, use it or lose it.”

Exercises cannot stop Parkinson’s disease progression, but based on the study, regular physical activity can help PD patients to:
• minimize further cell damage.
• decrease loss of cognitive skills.
• increase muscle control and build muscle strength.
• improve balance and coordination.
• reduce depression.

“Unfortunately, there is no cure yet for Parkinson’s disease,” says Ms. Jenkins. “I believe that exercise can help to delay the progression of Parkinson’s and improve emotional well-being, which is very important for PD patients.”

Kay Mixson Jenkins is the Georgia state co-coordinator for the Parkinson’s Action Network, leads the Effingham County Parkinson’s support group and was selected as a Parkinson’s patient advocate for UCB, Inc.

Prostate cancer - Things to know

Prostate cancer is a growing epidemic in men. In fact, prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in American men.

Miami, Florida (CaymanMama.com) Prostate cancer is a growing epidemic in men. In fact, prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in American men. Genetics and age play a key element in its development.

According to WebMD.com, “Prostate cancer occurs when cells in the prostate gland grow out of control. There are often no early prostate cancer symptoms, but some men have urinary symptoms and discomfort. Prostate cancer treatment options are surgery, chemotherapy, cryotherapy, hormonal therapy, and/or radiation. In some instances, doctors recommend ‘watchful waiting.’”

Prostate cancer grows very slowly. In terms of the development of this form of cancer, diet and genetics play a powerful role, but are not the only elements. Even a sedentary lifestyle plays a part in contributing to prostate cancer risks.

Prostate cancer screening tests have risks that go along with them, but are definitely needed, though not all screening tests are helpful.

If you or someone you know is interested in going in for a screening test, it is important to discuss the test with a doctor to get a full overview of know the risks of the test and whether it has been proven to reduce the risk of dying from the cancer.

Despite heated debates on the topic, most medical experts agree the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test remains an essential and necessary diagnostic tool for diagnosing prostate cancer.

The Mummy's Curse

Heart disease signs found in mummies

Orlando, Florida (WiredPRNews.com) – New research suggests that modern risks factors for heart disease such as eating fast food aren’t the only culprits of heart disease. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), researchers recently found evidence of heart disease in ancient mummies using a CT scan.

Dr. Michael Miyamoto of the University of California at San Diego, a researcher on the study, is quoted by the AP as stating of the findings, “We were struck by the similar appearance of vascular calcification in the mummies and our present-day patients… Perhaps the development of atherosclerosis is a part of being human.”

The social status of the mummified individuals is suggested to have played a role in their developing high blood pressure and related health issues. Dr. Randall Thompson, a cardiologist at the Mid America Heart Institute in Kansas City, who was also a researcher on the study, is further quoted by the AP as stating, “Rich people ate meat, and they did salt meat, so maybe they had hypertension (high blood pressure), but that’s speculation.”

Medical Staff of Closed St. Vincent’s Hospital Reeling at News of Sunday Times Square Bomb Scare

New York, NY — May 3, 2010 2010-05-03 18:05:36 (GMT) — The medical staff of the boarded St. Vincent’s Hospital is expressing shock as news of Saturday’s Times Square near-miss bomb scare arrived only hours after the 160 year-old hospital’s Level 1 Trauma Center was sealed for the last time. As in the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center and September 11th, injured victims of a Times Square incident would have been rushed to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Greenwich Village, the only Level 1 Trauma Center on Manhattan’s West Side between the southern tip of the City and 116th Street.

On April 30th, St. Vincent’s was shut and its emergency room/trauma center boarded up by the New York State Department of Health less than 36 hours before Homeland Security was alerted to the smoking Nissan Pathfinder.

“The closest hospital, a straight shot down 7th Avenue, has just been taken off-line. One thing is clear: People will die due to the closure of St. Vincent’s Hospital.” said Dr. Josh Torgovnick, a neurologist who served the hospital until last week.

At a meeting Friday night, 500 angry community members met at Chelsea’s Hudson Guild to demand that a full service hospital and trauma center replace the closed St. Vincent’s, rather than the more modest urgent care center slated for the site. Attorneys Yetta Kurland, Tom Shanahan and community organizer Miguel Acevedo report that more community events and legal action is in the works. “We won’t stop until we have a full-service hospital,” said Acevedo, President of the Robert Fulton Houses Tenants Association.

Tanning News: Study warns of tanning bed addiction

tanning-bed

A new study suggests the use of tanning beds may be linked to addiction for some.

Washington (WiredPRNews.com)2010-04-20 15:41:07 (GMT) – A new study suggests tanning bed usage can get addictive. As reported by AFP, the study by researchers at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the University at Albany, State University of New York states people who use the equipment may have a higher likelihood of suffering from anxiety and abusing substances.

Catherine Mosher of Memorial Sloan-Kettering and Sharon Danoff-Burg are quoted in the report as stating of the findings, “Despite ongoing efforts to educate the public about the health risks associated with natural and non-solar UV radiation, recreational tanning continues to increase among young adults.” The authors are further quoted as stating that future research may show that “treating an underlying mood disorder may be a necessary step in reducing skin cancer risk among those who frequently tan indoors.”

Concern over cancer overdiagnosis

A recent study suggests there is a need to address the problem with overdiagnosis of cancers.

U.S. (WiredPRNew.com)2010-04-23 14:21:38 (GMT) – A recent review demonstrates a need to address an issue with cancer overdiagnosis according to authors of the review. As reported by HealthDay News, the review found that a number of breast, thyroid, prostate, lung, and other cancer case types may represent overdiagnosis.

Dr. H. Gilbert Welch and Dr. William Black, of the VA Medical Center in White River Junction, Vt., and the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, are quoted in the report as stating in a written news release from the U.S. National Cancer Institute, “Whereas early detection may well help some, it undoubtedly hurts others… Often the decision about whether or not to pursue early cancer detection involves a delicate balance between benefits and harms . . . different individuals, even in the same situation, might reasonably make different choices.”

More information about the review may be available in the April 22 online publication of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Congress Delays Medicare Fee Cuts For Chiropractors Until May 31

On April 15, President Obama signed legislation that will delay the scheduled 21% Medicare fee decrease until May 31, 2010.

SEATTLE, WA April 18, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- On April 15, President Obama signed legislation that will delay the scheduled 21% Medicare fee decrease until May 31, 2010. For chiropractors and other physicians in the Medicare program, the battle is not yet won, but this delay provides Congress with additional time to develop a longer term solution to the proposed cuts.

"Even though the fee cuts technically did not take place, chiropractors still may have to take action." says Dr. Tom Necela, who is President of the consulting firm The Strategic Chiropractor and author of a popular blog dedicated to chiropractic billing, coding and documentation.

Action may be required because as of April 15, 2010, CMS had started to pay claims from April 1 at the lower fee schedule amount that was initially proposed. Medicare promises to reprocess payments at the higher amount after Congressional action to override the cut. CMS expects to automatically reprocess claims paid and pay doctors the difference unless the doctor submitted the claim with a fee lower than the new fee schedule amount.

Based on this information, Necela recommends that chiropractors who received a lower payment than anticipated should resubmit the claim for reprocessing. In addition, unless cash flow is tight, chiropractors may choose to wait before submitting claims for April services until Medicare reports that it can process and pay those claims at the proper rate in order to avoid the accounting difficulties that those steps could create.

The Medicare physician fee schedule was initially scheduled to have been cut 21 percent on January. 1, 2010. Congress acted late last year to freeze payment rates at 2009 levels through the end of February. Congress then acted again to extend the freeze through the end of March. According to the latest developments, fee cuts are now delayed through May 31, 2010.

For more information about these fee cuts or other billing, coding and documentation requirements may affect chiropractors, go to http://strategicdc.com/blog. The American Chiropractic Association has also organized a protest against these fee cuts. Interested chiropractors can find more information on how to fight this proposal at http://www.amerchiro.org.
