Toxic Dolphins Found in Miami

Area: Miami, Florida

toxic_porpoise

The closer the dolphins lived to downtown Miami, the more of the chemical was concentrated in them. The flame retardant can cause sterility in dolphins. Brominated flame retardants are applied to furniture, clothes and electronics to prevent them from burning. They also help slow the ignition of items that are in a burning room.

Unfortunately they have been used so much they are showing up in unintended places, with potentially dire consquences. Bottlenose dolphins accumulate this type of chemical, and PCBS, and mercury. Flame retardants alone have been found to cause death of unborn dolphin calves for first time mothers.

FDA Seeks Public Input on Tobacco Regulation

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced today that it is seeking public input on the implementation of its historic new authority overseeing tobacco products in the United States. In a Federal Register notice, the agency invites the public to provide information and share views on a wide range of topics, from product content to advertising and marketing. All public comments will be posted online.

"We're interested in receiving input from across the country as the FDA begins to implement this important new authority intended to reduce the enormous toll of suffering and death caused by tobacco products in the United States," said Dr. Margaret A. Hamburg, Commissioner of Food and Drugs. "We look forward to the public's response."

The Federal Register notice can be viewed at: http://www.federalregister.gov/OFRUpload/OFRData/2009-15549_PI.pdf.

One of the most common forms of litter are cigarette butts. Once these butts enter waterways, they become toxic to fish. According to a new study by San Diego Sate University (SDSU), filter-tipped cigarette butts are deadly to marine and freshwater fish. In fact, researchers would like to have the butts classified as hazardous waste.

Littered cigarette butts kill fish

Cigarette butts are not biodegradable. The filters are made up of 12,000 plastic-like cellulose acetate fibers that trap nicotine and tar. There’s enough nicotine trapped in 200 used cigarette filters to kill a human!

An estimated 1.69 billion pounds of butts are littered each year worldwide, so you can imagine the negative effects these butts have on aquatic life when they wash into streams and oceans. SDSU Public Health Professor Tom Novotny explains, “It is toxic at rather low concentrations. Even one butt in a liter of water can kill the fish in a period of 96 hours.”

A River Runs Backwards … Or is it Forwards?

St. Johns River in Florida was found temporarily flowing from north to south on Thursday, May 21, which is not normal activity for the middle St Johns basin. This basin makes geography bowl fame for being one of only two major rivers of the world (along with the Nile) to flow from south to north. The temporary reversal in flow, an anomaly known as “negative flow,” was caused by persistent wind from the Atlantic Ocean pushing water upstream about 190 miles from the mouth. The negative flow lasted only a few days, and although it caused the middle stretch of the river to rise, there were no major flooding issues. Where There’s Fire, There’s … Global Warming?

The recent surges of large, uncontrolled fires throughout most of the world have potentially massive impacts on human health, the economy, biodiversity, global warming and even on additional fires. Fires contribute to global warming because they emit greenhouse gasses, and the resulting warming conditions further increase extreme fire weather since warmer climates lead to dryer conditions. As more fires occur, additional spikes of carbon emissions occur as well. To learn more about USGS research on these and other global implications of wildfires, visit http://www.werc.usgs.gov/pubbriefs/keeleypbapr2009.html

NEWS QUICKIES

Warm Weather Throughout The Pacific NW Fuels 2009 Fire Season - SEATTLE, Wash. -- Ample moisture and cooler temperatures for Alaska and Pacific Northwest states may keep 2009 fire potential in normal ranges, but after multiple weeks of warm weather, fuel supplies are drying out. Persistent drought conditions may well drive significant wildfire risk for north-central Washington, and the recent near-record spring dry spell is boosting fire risk in western Washington as well. FEMA Acting Regional Administrator Dennis Hunsinger encourages residents living on wooded lots and wildland/urban interface areas to stay informed on local conditions and take steps now—clearing brush and creating defensible perimeters around their homes.

The 2009 eruption of Redoubt volcano continues . Seismic activity is low, but remains above background. The extended lava dome remains unstable and could fail with little or no warning, leading to significant ash emissions and possible lahars in the Drift River valley. AVO will provide frequent updates of the volcano's status and the earliest possible warning of significant explosive activity and other hazards.
